The challenge
If not now, when? The Himalayan region is vulnerable, not just to earthquakes, but also to deforestation and pollution of air, soil and water by garbage and untreated sewage. The legendary deodars (Himalayan cedar) and oak trees have given way to pine trees that deplete the underground water and are the major cause of forest fires. The pathways that nature lovers tread are scarred with plastic wrappers and discarded bottles. Action, both by the government and the public is urgently required to protect the environment of this region that has always been a source of oxygen and fresh water for the whole sub-continent.
Green Hills, a registered, non-profit organisation, has taken up this challenge in Almora District. We aim to clean and green the town and the surrounding villages.
